Graduation requirements for senior high school students are established according to state statutes, the State Board of Education regulation, and the policy of the Board of Education of District 501. A Unit is earned for each subject successfully carried for a school year or the equivalent. The last two units must be earned in residence at the high school granting the diploma.

The district shall graduate only students whose reading skills meet district graduation standards unless the student is exempted by his/her special education Individual Education Plan. This became effective with the freshman class of 1998. Further, the district has identified work keys "Reading for Information" as an assessment tool to measure reading competency. Students will have several opportunities each year to complete this requirement prior to anticipated graduation date.
